Various stages which the Department has passed to become Directorate General of Immigration and Passports are Indicated below:
 

Upto April 1961 Part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with Secretariat Status
April to Sept 1961 Part of the Ministry of Home Affairs (now Ministry of Interior) with Secretariat Status
Oct 1961 Directorate of Immigration and Passports created with the status of attached department

Prior to 1972 there were only six passport offices in Pakistan:

  1. Karachi

  2. Lahore

  3. Rawalpindi

  4. Peshawar

  5. Quetta

  6. Hyderabad

Currently Directorate General I&P is issuing Passports from 26 Regional Passport Offices and 100 Pakistan Missions abroad.

  • Issuance of passport to Citizens of Pakistan.
  • Issuance of Citizenship Certificates, Naturalization Certificates and Renunciation of  Pakistan Citizenship Certificates.
  • Grant of stay and re-entry visa to foreign nationals.
  • Blacklisting of Foreign nationals for visa facilities.
  • Blacklisting of Pakistan nationals for Passport facilities.
  • Issuance of warning circulars for preventing undesirable Pakistanis and aliens from leaving and entering Pakistan respectively.
  • Monitoring of recovery of Repatriation charges from Pakistanis deported from abroad on Government expenses.
  • Impounding and cancellation of passports of Pakistani nationals.
  • Designing passport booklets, fixation of its price, printing and supply to the Regional Passport Offices and Missions abroad.
  • Dealing with passport and policy matters and amendments of the passport and visa manual.
